Primary Soils Activities: Roots and Shoots

Plants grow above and below ground—and in the roots and shoots activity, your pupils will explore how roots and shoots work together.

They will learn how some Farmers use these plants in herbal leys: pasture mixes of grasses, herbs, and legumes that feed animals, improve soil, and support wildlife.

In the 'Investigating Roots resource', your pupils can explore how roots help plants absorb water and why they are vital for survival. They can compare taproots and fibrous roots, noting differences in water absorption. Through timed observations and charting results, they develop skills in prediction, recording, and scientific comparison.
